1. A Must-Try Authentic Matcha Crepe in Asakusa for Matcha Lovers
One of the reasons why Tabanenoshi’s crepes are so special is their dedication to using high-quality matcha.
The shop uses premium matcha from Kakegawa City in Shizuoka Prefecture, one of Japan’s most renowned tea-producing regions.
This matcha is carefully produced by a historic tea farm with over 100 years of tradition, which has received numerous awards for its exceptional quality.
Their attention to detail goes beyond just the crepe itself. The carefully selected matcha is used in both the crepe and the rich matcha cream inside.
What makes this crepe even more impressive is that the matcha ice cream inside uses a different type of matcha with its own unique aroma and flavor.
By selecting different types of matcha for each element, Tabanenoshi creates layers of taste and fragrance that can only be experienced in this special dessert.
More than just a matcha sweet, this crepe offers a unique opportunity to experience Japanese tea culture and the craftsmanship behind every bite.
2. The Japanese Craftsmanship Behind Tabanenoshi’s Beautiful Crepes
The charm of Tabanenoshi is not only found in its delicious crepes.
Another special feature is its beautifully designed packaging, which reflects the spirit of Japanese craftsmanship.
Each crepe is wrapped with a decorative Kaga Mizuhiki, a traditional Japanese art form from Ishikawa Prefecture.
These delicate Mizuhiki decorations are carefully handmade one by one by a fifth-generation artisan. By incorporating this traditional craft into a modern dessert experience, Tabanenoshi allows visitors to appreciate the beauty of Japanese culture from the moment they receive their crepe.
What makes this experience even more memorable is that the Mizuhiki decoration can be taken home and reused as a bookmark.
Even after enjoying the crepe, you can keep this small piece of Japanese craftsmanship as a special souvenir from your trip.
At Tabanenoshi, it is not just about enjoying a delicious dessert—it is about experiencing Japanese beauty, tradition, and thoughtful hospitality.
3. Which Crepe Should You Choose for Your First Visit? Tabanenoshi’s Matcha Brûlée Crepe
If it is your first time visiting Tabanenoshi, I highly recommend trying their Matcha Brûlée Crepe.
Tabanenoshi offers a variety of Japanese-style crepes, including many creations featuring matcha. Among them, the Matcha Brûlée Crepe is a popular choice that perfectly combines the rich flavor of carefully selected matcha with the aroma of freshly caramelized brûlée.For those who want to enjoy an authentic Japanese dessert experience in Asakusa, or for matcha lovers looking for something special, this crepe is definitely worth trying.
But what does it actually taste like?
In the next section, I will share my personal experience, including the flavors, textures, and why I, as a matcha lover, wished I had discovered Tabanenoshi sooner.
My Experience
When I entered Tabanenoshi, I was welcomed by a refined and relaxing space that beautifully combines the modern feel of mortar walls with the warmth of Japanese cypress wood.
The stylish interior also has a traditional Japanese touch, creating the perfect atmosphere for enjoying a dessert at a leisurely pace. Since the shop has seating areas, you can sit down and enjoy your freshly made crepe comfortably.
This time, I ordered the classic “Kakegawa Matcha Brûlée Crepe” and the seasonal “Kakegawa Matcha & Yuzu Crepe.”
At Tabanenoshi, each crepe is carefully prepared after you place your order.
Watching the entire process—from baking the crepe to adding the cream and toppings—is one of the highlights of the experience. It is exciting to see your dessert being created right in front of you.
The Kakegawa Matcha Brûlée Crepe is filled with carefully selected ingredients, including matcha cream, whipped cream, matcha ice cream, strawberries, cookies, and more.
The most memorable moment was watching the brûlée being caramelized with a torch right in front of me. The delicious aroma and the sight of the sugar turning perfectly crisp made the experience even more enjoyable.
I recommend breaking the brûlée layer with a spoon before taking your first bite.
The crispy caramelized surface pairs beautifully with the rich and creamy matcha filling inside. As you continue eating, the crunchy cookies, smooth matcha ice cream, and creamy layers create a wonderful variety of textures.
Although it looks elegant, the crepe is surprisingly satisfying and offers a generous portion.
The seasonal “Kakegawa Matcha & Yuzu Crepe” is a refreshing choice, especially during the summer. 🍊
It is topped with yuzu sorbet, yuzu warabi mochi, and sweet red bean paste. Inside the crepe, you will also find pieces of yuzu fruit and plenty of refreshing yuzu sorbet.
The bright citrus aroma of yuzu and the elegant bitterness of matcha create a perfect balance. It is a seasonal dessert that feels light and refreshing, even on hot summer days.
Besides these crepes, Tabanenoshi also offers a variety of other options, including sweet potato crepes and classic sugar butter crepes.
With desserts that are delicious to eat and beautiful to look at, Tabanenoshi offers a special experience that will make you want to come back again and again when visiting Asakusa.
