I had visited cat cafes and rabbit cafes before, but this was actually my very first time at a dog cafe.
When I found out there was a dog cafe in Asakusa, I couldn't resist checking it out.
You might be wondering: Do I need a reservation? How much does it cost? How does it work? What kinds of dogs are there? Will the staff explain everything in English?
Don't worry! In this article, I'll answer all of these questions and share my experience at Dog Cafe Rio Asakusa.

1. Do You Need a Reservation?
No reservation is required at Dog Cafe Rio, making it a perfect place to stop by during your sightseeing in Asakusa. It's also a great spot to take a break on a hot or rainy day.
However, the cafe tends to be busiest between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. If you'd like to spend more time with the dogs in a relaxed atmosphere, I recommend visiting on a weekday.
The cafe is located downstairs, but if you're curious, just head down and take a look inside. Once you see all the adorable dogs waiting to greet you, you'll probably find it impossible to resist going in!
2. Admission Fees & How It Works

- Weekdays: ¥270 per 10 minutes
- Weekends & Public Holidays: ¥370 per 10 minutes
- Unlimited soft drinks: ¥385
You can also purchase treats such as jerky, Churu, and chicken strips if you'd like to interact more with the dogs.

At the reception, the staff also provide instructions in English, so international visitors can feel at ease. After a brief explanation of the house rules, you'll receive a card holder showing your entry time.
Next, place your shoes and belongings in the designated lockers, change into the provided slippers, and head into the dog area. Don't forget to wash your hands thoroughly before playing with the dogs.
Soft drinks are available with unlimited refills, but please take only one bottle at a time. If you'd like to take a drink with you when you leave, only opened bottles may be taken out of the cafe.

3. What Kind of Dogs Are There?
About 20 small dogs live at Dog Cafe Rio Asakusa.
You'll meet a variety of breeds, including Papillons, Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles, Maltese, Miniature Dachshunds, Miniature Schnauzers, Mameshiba, Shih Tzus, Pomeranians, American Cocker Spaniels, Pugs, and Beagles.
Each dog has its own unique personality. Some are friendly and love attention, while others are calm and easygoing. Take your time getting to know them—you might just meet your new favorite furry friend!
My Experience
As soon as I stepped inside, I was welcomed by a bright and spacious room where the dogs could run around and play freely.
Each dog had its own unique personality. Some happily climbed onto my lap, some loved being petted, some eagerly invited me to play, and a few even showed off tricks like "shake" and "paw." It was so much fun getting to know them all.
If you buy some treats, the dogs will quickly gather around you, making you feel like the most popular person in the room! Just keep in mind that dogs wearing clothes may be on a special diet, so please don't give them treats.
