Sophie discovers a hidden café in Asakusa and hesitates to enter alone, worried about the language barrier. GOMA appears from her phone and reassures her that the owners are friendly and welcoming. Encouraged, she steps inside and enjoys a warm, comforting meal, feeling deeply moved by the delicious gluten-free tortilla that leaves her genuinely impressed. Everything is made with wholesome, carefully selected ingredients, and the experience feels both nourishing and heartwarming. Touched by the moment, she receives a special “KAKE NUTS” souvenir from the owner. After leaving, Sophie walks along the Sumida River feeling happy and fulfilled, with GOMA encouraging her to check the blog for more details.

With so many restaurants and cafes in Asakusa, it can be hard to know where to go. You may find yourself thinking:

“I want to spend some quiet time away from the busy tourist areas.”
“I’d like to visit locally owned cafes rather than chain restaurants.”
“I want to enjoy Japanese ingredients and carefully crafted dishes.”

If that sounds like you, I’d like to introduce a hidden gem cafe open only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays—“Kunsei Dangi” in Asakusa.

Tucked just a short walk from Kaminarimon, this cafe remains relatively unknown, making it a true hidden spot where you can enjoy a slow, relaxed moment away from the crowds.

The menu features thoughtfully prepared dishes made with carefully selected ingredients, including gluten-free tortillas and other body-friendly options. You can truly feel the owners’ dedication to quality and their appreciation for Japanese ingredients in every plate.

What left the strongest impression, however, was the warmth of the owner couple. Although it was my first visit, they welcomed me as if we had known each other for years, creating an atmosphere so comfortable that it naturally brought a smile to my face.

For those who want more than just delicious food—who also value meaningful encounters during their travels—this is a special weekend-only cafe I highly recommend visiting.

1. Looking for a Quiet Escape from the Crowds?

Asakusa is one of Tokyo’s most popular tourist destinations, known for famous spots like Kaminarimon Gate and Nakamise Shopping Street. However, if you walk a little farther from the main tourist areas, you'll find places where you can slow down and relax.

One such place is Kunsei Dangi, a hidden cafe that opens only on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. With its limited opening days, it feels like a lucky find during a weekend stroll around Asakusa.

Away from the busy tourist areas, the cafe offers a calm and welcoming atmosphere. It’s the perfect place to take a break, relax at your own pace, and recharge during your trip.

Another bonus is its location near Sumida Park. After enjoying a leisurely meal or coffee, you can take a walk along the Sumida River and enjoy the peaceful scenery.

If you're looking for a slower, more relaxed side of Asakusa beyond the usual tourist attractions, Kunsei Dangi is well worth a visit.

2. Looking for Healthy and Nourishing Food While Traveling?

When traveling, it's easy to indulge in local treats and street food, but finding meals made with wholesome ingredients can sometimes be a challenge. If you're looking for food that is both delicious and nourishing, Kunsei Dangi is a great place to stop by.

The cafe serves dishes made with carefully selected ingredients, including pesticide-free vegetables and gluten-free tortillas made from rice flour. The menu is designed with both flavor and well-being in mind, allowing you to enjoy a satisfying meal while treating your body kindly.

One ingredient that stands out is Maya nut, a superfood that has been enjoyed since the time of the Maya civilization. Rich in nutrients, it contains all nine essential amino acids and is known for being naturally caffeine-free, low in fat, and gluten-free.

Maya nut is used in the cafe's Maya Nut Amazake Soy Latte, which has a pleasantly nutty flavor and a gentle sweetness. It is also incorporated into the gluten-free tortilla, reflecting the owners' commitment to creating food that is both unique and nourishing.

3. Looking for Warm Hospitality from the Owners?

One of the most memorable parts of traveling is not only the places you visit or the food you eat, but also the people you meet along the way.

The owner of Kunsei Dangi, Mr. Hashimoto, has spent many years working in the food industry, including running a melon bread shop and working at ramen restaurants. Although customers often praised the food as delicious, he sometimes felt uncomfortable serving products that contained artificial additives.

That experience inspired him to create a place where he could offer food that supports both physical and mental well-being. This vision eventually led to the opening of Kunsei Dangi.

Because the cafe operates from a shared kitchen, it is open only three days a week—Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Yet despite its limited schedule, visitors are welcomed with genuine warmth by Mr. Hashimoto and his wife, whose passion for healthy food can be felt throughout the cafe.

They mentioned that they are not very confident in English, but their friendliness, smiles, and willingness to communicate easily overcome any language barriers. During my visit, they made me feel welcome from the moment I arrived, creating an atmosphere that felt warm and inviting.

My Experience

During my visit, I ordered the Asakusa Tortillinya (served with juicy ravioli and Japanese dashi made from domestic ingredients) and a Maya Nut Amazake Soy Latte.

The first thing that impressed me was the chewy texture of the gluten-free tortilla. The tortilla is made with corn flour, rice flour, Maya nut, sake, and tamari soy sauce, giving it a unique flavor and texture while reflecting the cafe's commitment to quality ingredients.

The tortilla is topped with a colorful variety of ingredients, including pesticide-free vegetables, green papaya, miso, house-made tomato sauce, dried daikon radish, pulled meat, smoked olive oil, nuts, and bonito flakes. Guests can choose either chicken or pork for the pulled meat. Topping the tortilla with bonito flakes is a uniquely Japanese touch that international visitors may enjoy experiencing.

I also loved the variety of nuts used throughout the dish, including almonds, walnuts, cashews, and macadamia nuts, which added both flavor and texture.

The juicy ravioli made with 100% domestic pork was another highlight. As soon as I cut into it, flavorful juices flowed out from the filling. Made without artificial seasonings and flavored with seven herbs, including rosemary and sage, it offered a wonderful balance of rich flavor and aroma.

The accompanying Japanese dashi was equally memorable. Made using ingredients from Kombu no Kawahito, a specialty kombu shop in Asakusa, it had a comforting and delicate flavor that paired beautifully with the meal.

For my drink, I chose the Maya Nut Amazake Soy Latte, made with additive-free, sugar-free amazake, soy milk, and Maya nut. Its gentle sweetness and nutty aroma made it both comforting and refreshing.

I also received a souvenir called KAKE NUTS, developed by the cafe's owner. Rich in vitamin E and blended with medicinal herb powder and natural mineral salt, it is packed with beneficial nutrients. I tried it on udon at home, and I can imagine it working just as well on rice with a raw egg, tofu, or even ginger pork.

What impressed me most was how many carefully selected ingredients were incorporated into a single meal. Preparing this variety of wholesome ingredients at home would take considerable time and effort.
At Kunsei Dangi, however, you can enjoy them easily in delicious, thoughtfully prepared dishes that leave both your body and mind feeling satisfied.
