Looking for a healthy Japanese lunch in Asakusa? I found a hidden cafe called SANSOU CAFE that opened in January 2026 and is still under the radar.

In this 8-panel comic, Sophie discovers SANSOU CAFE in Asakusa, a hidden gem offering a healthy enzyme brown rice plate with salt-koji grilled salmon and seasonal sides. The café is vegan- and gluten-free-friendly, has an English menu, and is easy for solo visitors. The panels show Sophie entering the café, ordering her meal, enjoying the enzyme brown rice plate with a big smile, and feeling satisfied with her healthy lunch.

Asakusa is home to many great places to eat, from long-established Japanese restaurants to popular street food spots. Enjoying local favorites like tempura, tonkatsu, and ramen is part of the fun of visiting the area.

However, some visitors find it surprisingly difficult to find a healthy lunch in Asakusa. With so many fried dishes and meat-heavy restaurants, it can take a little extra effort to find places that offer lighter meals or options for vegan or gluten-free diets.

You might also wonder:

“Is it comfortable to visit alone?”

“Do they have an English menu?”

“Will a healthy lunch leave you satisfied?”

“Do they have vegan or gluten-free options?

”If you’ve had these questions while exploring Asakusa, this cafe might be just what you’re looking for.

Opened in January 2026, this still little-known cafe serves a nourishing lunch plate featuring enzyme-fermented brown rice, along with vegan and gluten-free sweets. It’s a great place to know if you’re looking for a healthier meal in Asakusa.

In this article, I’ll guide you as your “friend in Asakusa,” sharing tips on how to fully enjoy your experience at SAUSOU CAFE and easing any concerns you might have!

Goma's Tips for the Perfect SANSOU CAFE Experience

Even if it’s your first visit, keep these three points in mind to make sure your experience goes smoothly.

1. Is it comfortable to visit alone?

The interior of SANSOU CAFE feels warm and welcoming. Natural light comes in through the glass door at the entrance,  creating an open and relaxing atmosphere. The space is simple and calm, with subtle Japanese-style touches.

The cafe offers both counter seats that are perfect for solo visitors and table seating for those coming with friends or family. With 18 seats in total, the cafe is relatively small, but that also makes it feel cozy and comfortable—even if you’re visiting alone.

Natural light streams through the glass entrance, creating a bright and open interior with counter and table seating.

During this season, the cafe is decorated with cherry blossoms, adding a lovely spring atmosphere to the space. Enjoying your meal while looking at the blossoms makes the experience feel a little more special.

2. Do they have an English menu?

When dining at cafes and restaurants in Japan, one common concern is whether an English menu is available.

At this cafe, an English menu is provided for all items on the menu. Not only the dine-in menu but also the to-go menu is available in English, so you can order without worrying even if you don’t speak Japanese.

You can also simply point to the menu when ordering, which makes the process easy and stress-free.

According to the cafe, they have been seeing more international visitors recently, making it a convenient stop during your visit to Asakusa.

All menu items are available with English descriptions.

3. Will a healthy lunch leave you satisfied?

At SANSOU CAFE, the goal is to create a place where people can feel healthy and happy through food. The cafe focuses on seasonal ingredients, gentle cooking methods that are easy to digest, and carefully selected seasonings. They also try to avoid additives and trans fats as much as possible, creating meals that are kind to the body.

Their signature dish is enzyme-fermented brown rice, made from nutrient-rich brown rice packed with vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. It has a pleasantly chewy texture, which naturally encourages you to chew well and enjoy the flavors slowly. As a result, the meal feels both nourishing and satisfying.

The cafe also offers vegan and gluten-free sweets, allowing you to enjoy dessert while still keeping your meal light and balanced. These treats are thoughtfully made and surprisingly satisfying as well.

My Experience

For lunch, I ordered the “Today’s Enzyme Brown Rice Plate” (¥1,300), where you can choose either fish or meat as the main dish. I chose the salt-koji grilled salmon.

The salmon was perfectly seasoned and beautifully tender, paired with flavorful and pleasantly chewy enzyme-fermented brown rice. The plate also comes with several seasonal side dishes, making it a well-balanced and satisfying meal.

For an additional ¥330, you can add miso soup or the soup of the day. The soup I had was full of ingredients and very delicious.

For dessert, I tried the Sakura Cake (¥770), which is vegan and gluten-free. I ordered it with a drink set (¥350) and chose mint green tea.

Spring-only cherry blossom cake, vegan and gluten-free, filled with cherry paste and served with fresh cream and seasonal fruits.

They kindly add more hot water to the tea, so you can enjoy two cups.

The sakura cake was light and fluffy, with sweet sakura bean paste inside. It tasted wonderful together with the cream. Even though it’s made without wheat flour, the cake is still very satisfying while remaining light enough to enjoy after a meal.

One of the best things about this cafe is that you can enjoy dessert without feeling guilty.

If you’re looking for a healthy lunch in Asakusa, this cafe is definitely worth a visit—especially while it’s still a hidden gem.
