In spring, Asakusa is gently wrapped in
soft shades of cherry blossom pink.
Along the Sumida River and in nearby parks, beautiful cherry blossoms bloom and
many people gather to enjoy hanami (cherry blossom viewing).
In Asakusa, the cherry blossoms are usually
at their best from late March to early April. However, in 2026 the blossoms are
expected to start blooming between around March 18 and March 22, which is
slightly earlier than usual.

1. Cherry Blossom Spots in Asakusa & Kuramae
Spring in the Asakusa and Kuramae area is dotted with spots where you can enjoy beautiful cherry blossoms. Along the Sumida River, rows of cherry trees create a stunning scene, making it a wonderful place to take a leisurely stroll and enjoy the spring scenery. If you visit Asakusa in spring, these are all cherry blossom spots you should definitely stop by.
1-1. Sumida Park
Sumida Park is one of the most popular
cherry blossom viewing spots in Tokyo and has been selected as one of the “100 Best Cherry Blossom Viewing Spots in Japan.”
Rows of cherry blossom trees stretch for
about one kilometer along both sides of the Sumida River. In spring, the
riverside is covered in soft shades of pink as the cherry blossoms bloom.
Today, there are about 300 cherry trees on the Sumida (Skytree) side and
around 600 trees on the Taito (Asakusa) side, creating beautiful scenery
along the river.

At night, the cherry blossoms are
illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere that is different from the daytime
scenery. One of the highlights is the beautiful view of the cherry blossoms
along the Sumida River together with Tokyo Skytree.
Personally, I enjoy walking around this
area every spring. The combination of the long rows of cherry trees along the
river and the view of Tokyo Skytree feels very “Tokyo,” and it’s a place where you’ll naturally want to stop and take photos. Even just taking a
leisurely stroll here is a wonderful way to experience spring in Asakusa.

1-2. Sensoji Temple
One of Tokyo’s most
famous landmarks, Sensoji Temple is also a beautiful place to enjoy
cherry blossoms in spring.
After passing through the
iconic Kaminarimon Gate and walking along the lively Nakamise
Street, you’ll reach Hozomon Gate, where cherry
blossoms welcome visitors.
The weeping cherry tree in front of Hozomon
Gate is especially stunning and has become a popular photo spot. Its graceful
branches sway gently in the breeze, creating a scene that makes many visitors
stop and look up in admiration.
The contrast between the temple’s vivid vermilion buildings, the soft pink of the cherry blossoms,
and the blue spring sky is simply breathtaking.
Nakamise Street is also filled with shops selling traditional snacks and sweets. It’s a great place to enjoy delicious street food while taking in the beauty of cherry blossoms in spring.

1-3. Kuramae Shrine
Surrounded by modern apartments and office
buildings, Kuramae Shrine becomes a surprisingly beautiful spring
spot when the flowers begin to bloom.
Located just a 2-minute walk from Kuramae Station (A6 Exit) on the Toei Oedo Line, the shrine is easy to visit and attracts both locals and travelers.
What makes this shrine especially unique is
the stunning combination of bright yellow mimosa flowers and soft pink Kawazu
cherry blossoms, an early-blooming variety of sakura.
The mimosa and cherry trees here were grown
from young saplings and carefully nurtured over the years. When they bloom
together, the shrine grounds are filled with vibrant spring colors, creating a
picture-perfect scene that many visitors come to photograph.
In the Kanto region, mimosa flowers usually
bloom from early February to mid-March, while the Kawazu cherry blossoms at
Kuramae Shrine typically reach their best viewing period from mid-February to
early March. If you visit at the right time, you can see the beautiful contrast
of yellow mimosa and pink sakura blooming side by side.
If you’re lucky, plum blossoms may also be
blooming, meaning you might be able to enjoy three different spring
flowers—mimosa, cherry blossoms, and plum blossoms—all at once.
This colorful spring scenery has made Kuramae Shrine one of the most popular seasonal photo spots in the Kuramae area.

2. What Is Hanami? Popular Foods Japanese Enjoy During Cherry Blossom Viewing
Hanami is a traditional springtime event in Japan where friends, families, couples, and colleagues gather to enjoy cherry blossoms while eating and drinking together.
When the cherry blossoms begin to bloom,
many people gather in parks and along riversides. They spread picnic sheets under the cherry trees and celebrate the arrival of spring while sharing food and drinks together.
At the same time, many people also enjoy
hanami by slowly strolling along cherry blossom-lined streets, taking photos,
and appreciating the scenery. This relaxed way of enjoying the beautiful spring
landscape is another reason why hanami is so popular.
Hanami is not just about looking at cherry
blossoms—it’s also about
spending a leisurely time eating, drinking, and relaxing together. While
enjoying hanami under the blue sky during the day is wonderful, many people
also gather at night to admire the illuminated yozakura (nighttime
cherry blossoms). The atmosphere is completely different between day and night,
making both experiences special.
One of the highlights of hanami
is hanami food.
There are no strict rules when it comes to hanami food—people
simply bring their favorite dishes or buy something delicious to enjoy under the cherry blossoms.
2-1. A Classic Japanese Hanami Food: Onigiri
Of all the foods enjoyed during hanami, onigiri (rice balls) remain one of the most classic choices in Japan. In Asakusa,
there are many onigiri specialty shops where you can get onigiri to go. From
traditional fillings to more unique flavors, there are plenty of options to
try. Why not find your favorite onigiri and bring it along for your
hanami? (Clickhere for more details.)

2-2. Fukujuya: A Long-Established Inari Sushi Specialty Shop in Asakusa
Another popular hanami food is inari
sushi. Here I would like to introduce Fukujuya, a long-established
inari sushi specialty shop in Asakusa.
One of their recommended items for hanami
is the colorful and visually stunning Inari Roll. This roll-style inari
sushi is made by wrapping sushi rice and six kinds of vegetables in seasoned
deep-fried tofu.
The tofu is juicy and full of flavor, while
the crisp vegetables add a pleasant texture. The fragrant aroma of sesame oil
spreads through your mouth with every bite.
It’s also perfect hanami food to enjoy as you admire the Tokyo Skytree along the Sumida River.

3. Not Sure What to Try? 5 Recommended Spring Sweets in Asakusa
When cherry blossom season arrives,
many spring-limited sweets appear around Asakusa.
From traditional Japanese wagashi to modern
cafe desserts, there are so many options that it can be hard to decide what to
try.
In this article, I’ll introduce some of the best spring sweets you can enjoy in Asakusa—along with recommendations based on “which
dessert is perfect for what kind of person.”
3-1. Kanmidokoro Nishiyama | Seasonal Spring Dessert “Sakura”
Perfect for those who want to enjoy
traditional Japanese sweets in a classic wagashi cafe atmosphere.
Founded in 1852, A traditional
Japanese tea and sweet house (Kanmidokoro) Nishiyama is a long-established
Japanese sweets shop. As you pass through the traditional noren curtain at the
entrance, you’ll find a calm and cozy Japanese-style
space inside. It’s a popular spot to take a relaxing
break while exploring Asakusa.
Their seasonal dessert “Sakura” is a spring-themed set that
includes a mini anmitsu with sakura-flavored agar jelly, sakura syrup
ice cream (or mini shiratama zenzai), green tea, and sakura tea. Beautifully
presented, it’s the perfect dessert to enjoy during
cherry blossom season.
Anmitsu is a traditional Japanese dessert made with agar jelly, sweet red bean paste, red peas, and fruit. It’s typically enjoyed with a generous drizzle of kuromitsu (Japanese brown sugar syrup).
I chose the sakura syrup ice cream and
tried it together with the anmitsu. The creamy ice cream pairs wonderfully with
the gentle sweetness of the red bean paste and the refreshing texture of the
agar jelly. One of the charms of anmitsu is the variety of textures you can
enjoy in every bite.
Enjoying this limited-time spring dessert
in a calm, traditional Japanese setting feels like a truly authentic Japanese
sweets experience. It’s highly recommended for anyone
who wants to relax and enjoy wagashi after sightseeing or cherry blossom
viewing in Asakusa.

3-3. Mangando | Edo Kintsuba “Sakura”
Kintsuba is a type of Japanese sweet made by setting coarse red bean paste (tsubuan) with agar and coating it with thin wheat-flour dough. Slightly firmer than yokan, it has a thin outer layer and a generous filling of gently sweet red bean paste. Simple yet satisfying, it’s a classic wagashi that lets you fully enjoy the flavor of red bean paste.
You can order the Edo Kintsuba “Sakura” starting from just one piece, which
makes it perfect for enjoying while walking around. It’s
an easy treat to try while exploring Asakusa.
Please note that this item is available at the Orange Street main store, but it is not sold at the Nakamise Street shop. If you’re looking for it, be sure to visit the main store on Orange Street.
It’s also a good
idea to buy it together with the shop’s
famous sweet potato kintsuba as a souvenir. Trying different types of
kintsuba can be part of the fun.
However, this treat is best enjoyed within 24 hours, so be sure to eat it soon if you plan to take it home as a souvenir.

The cafe offers sweets made with seasonal fruits and treats inspired by seasonal events, and the colorful cakes lined up in the display make it hard to choose just one.
The cafe is also known for its world-class latte art, and one of the highlights of ordering a drink here is seeing the cute latte art created on top. It’s a small detail that makes your cafe time feel even more special.
During cherry blossom season, the recommended items are the “Cherry Blossom Tart” and the “Rich Matcha Latte.”
The Cherry Blossom Tart is a luxurious dessert filled with yomogi custard inside fluffy sakura cream, and it even contains a whole large Amaou strawberry. The generous swirl of sakura cream is topped with an adorable cherry blossom cookie, giving the tart a charming spring-like appearance.
