HATCOFFEE’s latte art is more than just a drink.
It’s a special cup that turns the feeling of “I love this” into something you can actually see.
At HATCOFFEE in Asakusa, you can enjoy latte art not only in 2D, but also in impressive 3D designs that seem to pop right out of the cup. All you need to do is tell them what you like and show a photo on your phone—they’ll recreate your idea as latte art with incredible detail.
That said, HATCOFFEE is usually quite crowded. If it’s your first visit, you might be wondering about a few things.
"What time is it most crowded, and do I need a reservation?"
"What kinds of requests are possible?"
"What’s the process from ordering to the finished latte art?"
When I visited, the cafe was filled with customers from both Japan and overseas.
Even so, this is an experience I highly recommend adding to your travel itinerary.
Requesting your latte art on the spot and seeing your “favorite” take shape is sure to become an unforgettable memory of Asakusa.
In this article, I’ll guide you as your “friend in Asakusa,” sharing tips on how to fully enjoy your experience at HATCOFFEE and easing any concerns you might have!

Goma's Tips for the Perfect HATCOFFEE Experience
Even if it’s your first visit, keep these three points in mind to make sure your experience goes smoothly.
1. Busy Time & Reservation
I visited HATCOFFEE on a weekday, but even at opening time (11:00 a.m.), there were already about five groups waiting in line. Once the door opened, more and more customers came in, and the cafe quickly became busy.
According to the staff, it usually starts to calm down around 3:00 p.m., so if you want a quieter visit, the later afternoon is a good choice.
You can make a reservation in advance through TableCheck, and I booked the 11:00 a.m. With a reservation, you can skip most of the waiting time, which is very convenient.
Here are a few important things about making a reservation:
- Each person must order at least two items (two lattes are also fine).
- If you cancel within six hours of your reservation, a 1,000 yen per person cancellation fee will apply. If you don’t cancel, your deposit will be refunded after your visit.
- You must arrive within 15 minutes of your reserved time.
If your schedule is tight or you want to include HATCOFFEE in your itinerary, booking in advance is definitely recommended.
2. What You Can Request
At HATCOFFEE, latte art can be requested in 2D (flat) or 3D (three-dimensional) designs.
However, there are some limitations for 3D latte art. For example:
- Dark-colored designs (e.g., a black dachshund)
- Very detailed designs (e.g., a person’s portrait)
- Unstable designs (e.g., Tokyo Tower)
Other important notes:
- Only one pet per cup is allowed in principle.
- Illustrations created by professional illustrators cannot be requested.
- Latte art cannot be made from images that have already been turned into latte art. Please provide the original image.
3. From Order to Latte Art
When entering the cafe, start by telling the staff how many people are in your party to secure a seat. Next, choose the type of latte and place your order at the register. You can select from cafe latte, cafe mocha, caramel latte, cocoa, honey latte, seasonal latte, vanilla latte, or milk tea. After that, decide whether to go for Request(2D or 3D / 1,400 yen) or Simple (only 2D / 700 yen). Once you’ve paid, take a seat and wait; your number will be called when your order is ready.

If you’ve ordered the request latte art, you’ll need to show the barista a photo of the design you want. Then, you can enjoy watching your latte art take shape while chatting with them. A smartphone stand is also available, making it easy to capture videos of the process.
My Experience
At HATCOFFEE, reservations require each person to order at least two items. I considered getting a sweet, but I couldn’t decide on a latte art design, so I ended up ordering two latte arts. I chose a cafe latte and a milk tea.
For the first latte, I wanted something that represented Asakusa, so I went with a design of Kaminarimon. For the second, I wanted something cute, so I asked for four little dogs. I left the expressions of the dogs up to the staff, and each one turned out so lively that just looking at them made me smile.
Watching the latte art being made was just as exciting. The staff carefully shaped the fluffy milk foam with a spoon and added details and expressions using chocolate sauce. Seeing my requests take shape right in front of me was truly moving.
The finished latte art was fluffy and jiggly, perfectly crafted, and almost too beautiful to drink. Of course, the taste was excellent as well; both the cafe latte and the milk tea had rich, satisfying flavors.
When you order latte art, smartphone stands are provided, making it easy to record the moment your favorite designs come to life in photos and videos. It’s also fun to capture your favorite latte art alongside other items or souvenirs.
Turning your favorite things into latte art in Asakusa, seeing them, photographing them, and tasting them is truly a special experience. The next time you visit Asakusa, I highly recommend trying your own original latte art—it’s an unforgettable memory waiting to happen.
