Just a short trip from Asakusa — discovering cute seasonal Japanese sweets and shiratama in Oshiage

At the foot of Tokyo Skytree, hidden in a quiet residential area of Oshiage, you’ll find a small and charming sweet shop.
Just steps away from the lively tourist spots, Manmaru is a place where you can enjoy beautiful seasonal Japanese sweets.

Cute and delicious at the same time — this is a sweet shop where you’ll want to take photos of everything. It’s the kind of place that’s both Instagram-worthy and truly tasty.
I visited in January, and during this season you can enjoy strawberry sweets, perfect for winter.
It’s also a very popular spot, with lines forming on Saturdays.

When you hear it’s a popular shop in Oshiage, you might wonder:
“Is it easy to get there?”
“Do I need a reservation?”
“Which menu should I choose?”

Don’t worry.
In this article, I’ll guide you through how to enjoy a cute and sweet experience in Oshiage — just a short trip from Asakusa.

Goma's Tips for the Perfect Asakusa Chinya Experience

Even if it’s your first visit, keep these three points in mind to make sure your experience goes smoothly.

1. How to get to Manmaru

Manmaru is located in a quiet residential area of Oshiage, near Tokyo Skytree.

It’s about a 6-minute walk from Tokyo Skytree Station (Tobu Line),
and about an 8-minute walk from Oshiage Station (Toei Asakusa Line / Tokyo Metro Hanzomon Line).

From Tokyo Skytree, it’s about an 8-minute walk, and only a 4-minute walk from Tokyo Solamachi, the shopping complex at the base of Tokyo Skytree. It’s a perfect place to stop by after visiting Tokyo Skytree or shopping at Solamachi.

If you’re coming from Asakusa, take the Toei Asakusa Line — it’s just two stops to Oshiage Station. You can also use a shared bicycle, which is a nice option on a sunny day.

2. About reservations

Manmaru accepts reservations on weekdays only.
Please note that reservations are not available on Saturdays, so if you plan to visit on the weekend, it’s best to go earlier in the day.
I made my reservation by phone, and the staff were very kind and helpful.
When I asked about the best time to visit, they recommended coming around opening time (12:00 p.m.), which is usually the easiest time to get a seat.
If you want to be sure you can get in, visiting right after opening or making a weekday reservation is a good idea.

Please note that there is no English menu available.
If you’re not confident with Japanese, I recommend using a translation app when ordering or asking questions. There is also a photo menu, so pointing at the items works well too.

Inside the cafe, the space is bright and spacious, with plenty of natural light.

Sunken floor seating, perfect for families with children.

3. About Menu

When I asked the staff about the most popular menu item, they said it was definitely shiratama. From January to April, you can enjoy strawberry shiratama, and in other seasons, there are mandarin, melon, and grape shiratama as well. With fruits changing by season, there’s always a reason to visit again and again.

Another fun feature of the cafe is that you can choose your favorite sweets from the menu and enjoy them with shiratama, creating your own personalized dessert plate.
Not only is it perfect for photos, but you can also enjoy the flavors just the way you like — a delightful experience to savor.

And we can’t forget about taiyaki.
As soon as you step inside the cafe, the warm, freshly baked aroma greets you.
I was too full to try it this time, but Taiyaki is also available to-go, so I’m looking forward to bringing some home as a sweet souvenir next time.

My Experience

What I Ordered
・Warm Strawberry Shiratama (¥790)
A seasonal menu item available from January to April. The strawberries used on this day were the Tochi Aika variety.
The shiratama dumplings are kneaded with only strawberry juice and served with sweet red bean paste and wasanbon syrup.
You can enjoy them on their own, with the syrup and red bean paste, or even dip them into your drink for extra fun.

・Strawberry Matcha Latte (¥750)
A drink combining Uji matcha with strawberry syrup.
The gentle sweetness of the strawberries is complemented by the pleasant texture of the fruit, making it truly delightful.
Be sure to mix it well before drinking to enjoy the perfect balance of creamy matcha and fruity strawberry flavor.

・Strawberry Monaka (¥390)
A seasonal monaka shaped like a plum blossom. Inside the crisp monaka shell are strawberries, sweet red bean paste, and condensed milk, creating a perfect harmony of sweet and slightly tangy flavors with every bite.
The monaka can be ordered alongside drinks or other sweets.
