Asakusa is often known for its traditional Japanese food, but it’s also a great area to enjoy Taiwanese cuisine. If you’re looking for something a little different during sightseeing, or want a lighter Asian meal, Taiwanese food is a perfect choice.
In this article, I’ll introduce four Taiwanese food spots in Asakusa that are easy to stop by while exploring the area.

Contents

1. Kayuyasato(粥や佐藤)

What kind of place is it?

'Kayuyasato' is a cozy spot in Asakusa that specializes in umami-rich rice porridge made with natural dashi broth.
The shop is small with about eight counter seats, and features stylish dried flower decorations at the entrance.
The owner, Mr. Sato, was inspired by rice porridge he tasted in Taiwan and created his own dashi-based recipes to bring that flavor to Japan.

What to Order

The A Set, which comes with a choice of rice porridge and two small side dishes, is a satisfying option that works well for breakfast or a light meal.
You can choose from several types of rice porridge, such as shiitake mushroom and pork rice porridge, Japanese dashi rice porridge, century egg rice porridge, and lu rou (braised pork) rice porridge.
I ordered the Japanese dashi rice porridge.
The broth is made with bonito flakes, kelp, and dried sardines, and the rice porridge is topped with umeboshi (pickled plum), kelp, and dried small sardines.
Don’t forget to add the seasoned soft-boiled egg as a topping.
The rice porridge is full of umami and has a gentle, comforting flavor that slowly warms your body with each bite.
If you’re looking for something more filling, the B Set is also recommended.
In addition to everything in the A Set, it includes a bamboo steamer with steamed vegetables and shumai, as well as almond tofu for dessert.
It’s a healthy yet hearty option that will leave you fully satisfied.

The small side dishes change daily, so it’s always fun to see what you get.

What kind of place is it?

Steams is located about a two-minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Toei Asakusa Line, with easy access from the Kuramae area as well. It’s a convenient stop during sightseeing.
The shop offers set meals featuring Taiwanese mianxian paired with steamed vegetables and steamed buns.
Mianxian is a warm dish made with thin noodles similar to somen, simmered in a thick, bonito-based broth. It’s a very popular Taiwanese street food.
The steamed vegetables and buns are made mainly with organic, low-pesticide, and pesticide-free produce.
The steamed buns, made with domestic wheat flour and rice flour, are soft and fluffy, and a great way to enjoy a nutritious meal.

What to Order

The Steams Set is an excellent value at ¥1,100 and includes a small bowl of mianxian,
one steamed bun of your choice, and steamed vegetables.
The soup also contains clams and is light and easy to drink, with mild seasoning.
If you’re not a fan of cilantro, you can ask to have it replaced with green onions.
You can choose your steamed bun from the day’s selection.

It’s best enjoyed with a spoon.

I chose the steamed bun filled with pumpkin paste.
